PUBLIC DOES SOME CASHING.

SIX OF SEVEN WINNERS AT CITY PARK ARE
HEAVILY SUPPORTED.

Rain Leaves the Track Sloppy — Benvolio Works Out
for Long Race — Ticket Counter-
feiters Are Abroad.

CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1906.

PRICE 5 CENTS

New Orleans. La., February 13. — With six of the
seven winners heaviiy supported by the public, the
liooks at City Park this afternfton received a drub.-
bing that they will remember for some time to
come. Favorites s<*ore<i in five of the races while
Bon Mot. winner of the sixth race, was backed
from 10 to 4 to 1. Pat Dunne’s share of the spoils
«*auie with the victories of Royai Legend and Envoy,
while Joseph Pugh added another to his winning
score by the victory of Free Booter in the second
race. Jo<*key Nict)l, as usual, carried off the riding
honors, lie lieing credited with two firsts during the
afternoon. Threatening weather kept mauy of the
regulars at home. Still the attendance was large
enough to keep the seventeen laiokmakers who drew
in .busy attending to their wants. The rain held off
until the sixth ra<*e. Then it poured for a few
minutes and the track was soon covered with water.
The going was sloppy with a good Inittom.

Presiding Judge Fraii<*es Trevelyan was still too
ill to be at bis |»ost.

Benvolio was worked out an extra mile and a
sixteenth after his race. This was in the nature of
a preparation for the American Turf Association
Handicap at three miles, wiiich will be run Satur-
day. His time for the mile and a half w’as
7:38, the cwo mHes -and the two . miles and a

sixteenth 3:43s. He was under restraint all of the
last furlong, being eased up to a w'alk at the end.

Bookmaker James Davis’ casliier was mulcted out
of $209 this afteriKton. After Capitauo won the
fifth race a ticket which read $lo0 to $."i0 was pre-
sc‘iite<l and cashe<l. Alwut ten minutes later an-
other ticket liearing a similar number and calling for
the same amount was presented. Pa.vment on tliis
ticket was refused at first, but w'hen the person
brought witnesses who vouched for iiim and who also
saw him make the wager it was paid. On closer
examination the first ticket prestmted W’as discovered
to be a counterfeit.

BOOKMAKERS KEEP MONEY AT CRESCENT.

Big Store, Sparsely Supported, the Only Winning
Favorite — Vagabond at 50 to I, the Surprise.

New tlrieans. I.41., February 13. — The “Kilties,”
famous i'anadiaii baud hel|>ed to draw a big attend-
auce to the old track this afternoon despite the
threatening weather. The sport was good, ciose fin
ishes lK*iiig the general rule. Just after the finish
of the fifth race a heavy rain fell leaving the track
muddy. This occasioned a change in form calcula-
tions and Sincerity Belle and Aurumaster, neither
of which finished in the money, found most supi>ort
Kickshaw found the going most to his liking and
outgame<l Bravery.

The surprise of the afternoon was Vagalarnd’s vic-
tory in the second race with odds of ."»0 to 1. The
horse is one of the h»t that llayman has turned
over to John Lowe, who succeeded “Dick” Watkins
as trainer.

Big Store was the only successful favorite during
the aftenioou and his victory dhl not prove costly
to the twenty-three lHM>kmakerK, sim*e he was not
heavily bucked.

S. t'. Hildreth’s Witfull will lie shipis‘d here iu a
few ilays to lie lived to .Major l»aingerfleld. Mose
liol Iblatt has announced the latter's racing career
terminated and will shortly place him in the stud.

.Shipments to Hot Springs t*tsitinue. Departures
today includeil C. Schawacker with uiue horses,
and J. J. Greely with three.

Johfi Lowe has decided to race at Oakiawn and
before that meeting begins, will ship Luretta and
two others belonging to him, and five owned by
M. L. Huy man to the Va|ior City. In the Hay man
lot will be Legatee, Vagabond and Leonard Joe
Hay man.

HOT SPRINGS POOLROOMS WILL NOT CLOSE.

Agree to Continue Operations During Oakiawn
Meeting — Sheriff and Mayor Are Hands Off.

Hot Springs, Ark., February 13. — Unless Dan
Stuart and John rondon are stronger in local intlu
ence than they now appear to be, the several pool-
rooms of this town, w’itb tlie iMjssilile exi-eption of
the Southern flub in which Stuart is interesteil. will
remain oiien during the meeting at Oakiawn.

This was agreed upon at a meeting of the man-
agers of uU riKMiis exceiit the Southern this after
noon. In former years the nMiins ch^Ml during the
progress of racing at the local trai'ks. but the
published statements of Jolin Condon and his con-
freres that the local situation was of little moment
and that the Oakiawn track would be operated
indefinitely, Irrespective of any faction or its inter-
ests caused the room managers to take action. The
rooms are enjoying good patronage just now and the
managers take the ground that it Is unreasonable
iu the racetrack managers to ask them to give way
indefinitely. •

SUerltC WUUaais, ''lio is the real power behind

the throne here, said today that he would not ask
the poolroom men to close, neither would he lend
his oflicial or private infiuence 'to this end, f^rguing
that it was out of his jurisilietion and of a purely
municipal order.

Mayor Bolding, when interviewed, was even more
emphatic than the sheriff. He said: “You can say

for me that in this matter 1 am hands off. I will
refuse to use m.v infiuem'e, either personal or official,
to close the pwlrooms or aid either faction. So far
as 1 am concerne<l the |>oolroiHu men i*an remain
open as lofig as tlieir business is legitimate iu this
state and as long as they pa.v their annual licenses.”

CHARGES OF TRICKERY RIFE AT OAKLAND.

Dumell and His Party Are Said to Have Profited
Extensively Through Orchan’s Victory.

San Francisco. Cal., February 13. — Rumors are
afioat in connection with the running of the former
Dnrnell horse. Orchan today. Trickery is alieged to
have been practiced in order to bring about condi-
tions that enabled his recent stable copnections to
consummate a gigantic (*oup they are geueralLv
credited wdth having engineered. Reimrts of his
ret'ent lameness and subsequent sale for the ridicu-
lously low price of f.TOO to Harrx Stover, are said
to have lK*en eirculate<l with a view of influencing
the market in his next start. It is conceded that
the Ossary horse's backers got uuusuall.v profitable
odds alK>ut him and may have mulcte<l iKK>lrooms
throughout the county' out of large sums of money.

E. Robinson was universally condemned for his
efforts on the favorite, La«ly Goodrich. The four-
year-old rece<led in the lieltlug, notwithstanding
heavy support.

.\gain five heavily backed favorites were suc-
cessful. A few of the big hiyers like George Rose
and others are rei>orted to have lost from |10,000
to $20,009 on tlm operations of the last two days.
'The entire ring seems demoralized.

Jockey S. Bonner has been granted a license.

(!lydeo was claimed for $1,800 by J. McCarthy

T. C. Williams unsuccessfutlsr boosted his itormer
charge. Theo Case, to $1,300. The horse was re-
tained b.v his owners.

TiUienor & Co. will ship their entire stable of
foiirt^n, including the Derby candidate Good Luck,
from Ascot next Sunday.

HOW IT FEELS TO BE A RACING JUDGE.

The four judges at New Orleans — Messrs. Trevel
yan. Murphy. Bryan aad McDonald — were re<*ently
asked “how does it feel to la? a racetrack judge. ’
The answer of each is an Indicwtion that they are
most fearful of the criticism attending the placing
of horses in a cU)se finish. They are unanimous in
expressing the feeling that no matter how accurate
their judgment, there are bound to lie many in the
throng of siieidators who will ever hold the opinion
that the placing was incorrect. Eai*h has little
([iparent regard for the opinion of that element
which may lie designated as “scolders” and which
gathers after each close finish to deride or applaud
the decision, the trend of tlieir comment lieing al-
ways influenctHl by the wagers tliey have made. The
cuiifideiKv of the fair-minded among the race goers
—and these are in the majority — is what the judge
strives for. Each of these gentlemen <*oufesses that
a close finish grates on his nerves. Judge Murphy
says “it isn’t what hapiiens, but what may hapiien.”
Judge Trevelyan says he can sympathize with the
Kentuckian who shouted “scatter, scatter,” when
be was asked to preside lii the stand and saw a
field of horses charging down to him like a line of
cavalry. Judge McDowell says “many a time in a
head ami head jumble at the wire 1 have wanted to
faint, but have refrained -from doing so. It would
not look well in public.”

Judge Br.van says that the placing of the horses
at the finish does not have for him the worry that
attends the meting out of discipline.

TRAINER ROWE'S NEW QUARTERS.

The t’astleton bred two-year-olds in the string
which Jimmy Rowe is handling for James R. Keene
at Sheeiishead Bay are declareil by New York turf-
men to lie “the best looking lot of youngsters on
Long Island.” There are thirty, five of these two-
year-olds, the names and lireediug of whicli were
published in Daily Racing Form of February 1.
They are reimrted to be iu the best of health* and
winter condition.

This is the second winter trainer Rowe has spent
at the Bay since Mr. Keene gave up the Brookdale
Farm and he now has everything fixed up so that he
misses none of the comforts of the farm. He has
just completed a house for himself near the stables,
which is by all odds the best and most comfortable
to be found at any truck. Une splendid room is
set aside for Mr. Keene’s use when he visits the
tiarn. The house is steam heated and lighted by
electricity tliroughout. There is a good house for
the stable Imys in the rear of the main stable that
is perfe<*t in all that iierlaius to the comfort and
aci'ommodution of the lads.

SYSTEM IS BAD IN REGISTRAR’S OFFICE.

In the matter of allowing ami recording names for
horses, there is a lack of system, if not gross care-
Iessue.ss in the office* of Registrar Wheeler. The
latest instance is reiiorted from Memphis. Among
the tw’o-3-ear-olds in the string of J. O. Keene there
is a bay filly by Star Ruby — Wi-Ne-Ma. Mr. Keene
asked that the name Fantana be registered fw her.
He received notification that this selectlmi had been
allowed and registered. There is now a three-year-
old by the name of Fantana. It is the grey filly by
First Mate — Pomona, which raced last year iu the
colors of George Holle.

Winner — B. g, by Oruainout — Elzarra (trained by T. Licalzi).

Wont to imst at 4:29. At jiost I minute. Start goo«l. Won easily; second the same. Kickshaw took
kindly to (he sloppy going, assumed a long lead in tlie first quarter and won witli ease. Bravery sprawled
badly in the first half, but came resolutely thereafter and finished going fast. C’olonist closeil a lilg gap
from a po<ir beginning. .Vurumaster also made up nuicb ground. Freil Hornbeck tired badly after going a
giaal tliree-qiiarters. Sincerity Belle was badly ridden. Kenton went fairly well.

.Senitehed — Ci()242 Wedgwood, 101; 600!)l Schoolmate. 112; 60‘245=(’ottage Maid. 108; G0215 Gotowin. 90.

a two-year-old chestnut filly by Getirge Kessler —
Annt Tessa (the dam of Rain’s Horn), which was
allowed the name of Rollicking Girl by the registrar.
In the string of Janies R. Keene tlie filly by King-
ston— Duchess Caroline is also l alled Kollickiug Girl.

Tliere are now two three-year-olds under the name
Red Ruby. One is the bay colt by Star Ruby —
Fireiizeta. The other is tlie bay filly by Rubicon —
Rainlet, by Azra. For purptises of distinction in its
charts, Dally Racing Form was compelled to affix
II. to the name of the latter. Kiamesha and Kla-
mesha II. is another illustration of this unwarranted
condition. Then there are the cases of Gossiper II.,
Mohawk II.. Happy Jack II,. Bummer IL, Maxette
aud Maxetta, Alamausor and Almauzor. Mcmia and
Molds, and scores of others ^vhlcl^ are simply poison

to the race going public iu the confusion created by
tlieir similarity.

When the registrar allows a name iu duplicate
he is violating the third section of Rule 39 of the
Jockey Cluli’s rules of racing, which reads: “No

name tiiat has been employed during the previous
five years, either In the stud or on the turf, shall be
duplicated. Nor can a name be claimed foe any
hor.se not registered as a foal.”

The committee of the Jockey Club which Is giving
its attention to the supervision and publication of
Volume IX of the Stud Book, would do well to set
Registrar Wheeler and bis clerks aright in the
nomenclature department. A word or two of caution
to the proofreader on the Racing Calender about the
mistakes iu the list of registred foals of 1904 is also
iu order.
